Dr. Maria Montessori

The greatest sign of success for a teacher... is to be able to say, ’The children are now working as if I did not exist.’

Dr. Maria Montessori

In the early 1900's Dr. Maria Montessori, a native of Italy, developed a system of education based on her observation of the natural development of children. She believed that, given the right environment and with guidance from a properly trained teacher, a child's independence, self-esteem and love of larning could flourish. Today, almost 100 years later, her vision has been realized in Montessori Schools.

Montessori education embodies a profound respect for the child as an individual who takes an active role in his development. The beauty and order of a Montessori classroom are evident. Children learn by working with specially desgined materials in an environment which stimulates the senses and encourages exploration. Learning and work become a natural part of the child's life.
